Arquitecto alemán. Mientras estudiaba arquitectura en Munich recibió la influencia de los artistas expresionistas del grupo Blaue Reiter. La torre Einstein de Mendelsohn, en Potsdam (1919–21), una estructura muy escultural, refleja su temprana inquietud por la ciencia ficción. En la década de 1920 diseñó numerosas estructuras imaginativas, como los almacenes Shocken, en Stuttgart (1927), y Chemnitz (1928), notables por el profuso uso del vidrio en composiciones marcadamente horizontales. Huyó de los nazis en 1933 y finalmente se estableció en EE.UU.; sus obras en ese país incluyen el hospital Maimonides en San Francisco (1946).
